Day one of the Stand Up Paddle World Tour at Sapinus, Tahiti got off to a challenging start. The first round of the trials served up glassy head high surf with occasional overhead sets. As the morning wore on light winds turned into 20 knot gusts that made for some challenging conditions for the last few heats of the morning. With round one of the trials completed the following competitors advancing to round 2:

Saturay May 22nd, Tahiti.

Day 1 of the 3rd event for the Stand Up Paddle World Tour.

At Sapinus the surf is head high plus and building. The southwest swell pushing through the reef is making for grinding waves with some heavy sections. The morning warm up sessions has already claimed some broken boards. With the swell building we are anticipating some great action from round one of the trials.

The skies opened up for us the final weekend of the Stand Up World Tour, Stop number 2,  Anglet France. After a week of small surf and indecisive weather, Saturday began with pouring rain and strong winds. Somewhat disheartened, we decided to make a call for 1.30pm, to assess if conditions had improved and if it would become contestable. Sure enough, as the tide turned, the sun came out and the wind dropped, with solid 4 foot sets hitting the beach creating challenging conditions for the Final 16. After extensive examination of the forecast predicting cleaner conditions for Sunday, it was decided to run an expression session that showcased some of the most high performance Stand Up Paddlesurfing to date. Stand outs in the expression session were established by the Judges, with Hawaii's Kai Lenny being awarded the best wave, Duane Desoto, the best maneuver and Kainoa McGee, the best wipeout. Peyo Lizarazu was another stand out, delivering a spectacle for the assembled crowd with his infamous red boards.

Sunday dawned sunny but windy. Extremely stormy conditions awaited us at La Chambre d'Amour making us second guess our decision not to run the previous day. However our apprehensions were rested by vast improvements not only in weather but of waves in size and shape. The quarter finals were soon underway in the challenging conditions with Kai Lenny (HAW), Robin Johnston (HAW), Antoine Delpero (FR), Chris Bertish (SA), Colin McPhilips (US), Duane DeSoto (HAW), Peyo Lizarazu and Xabi Lafitte advancing through to the semis. Stand outs in this round were certainly Kai Lenny, Antoine Delpero, Colin McPhilips and Xabi Lafitte, all finding something to work with and making the most of the unpredictable surf.

By 2pm, the winds backed off, the tide started to push and the conditions turned on - we were to be treated with epic conditions for our semis and finals after all, as crowds lined the promenade, event site and rock jetties, to witness history in the making at this first leg of the Stand Up World Tour in Europe.

The first semi final was witness to some of the most impressive stand up paddlesurfing ever in competition: In any other heat Robin Johnston would have won with flying colors,  finding dreadging right handers that opened up to link critical turns all the way to the shore, but Kai and Antoine stepped up the level, delivering some of the most spectacular rides here in Anglet. The battle was on and neither was giving an inch, as each ride's quality outscored the last - both riders advanced, with Antoine taking the heat by the smallest margin, leaving Robin Johnston and Chris Bertish in a very respectable 5th place.

The second semi didn't see the waves of the first, but it was not without spectacular performances from all the riders. Despite a slow start, Colin McPhilips linked together wave after wave during the second half of the heat, winning the heat, closely followed by local favorite, Peyo Lizarazu, still showing the great form that he demonstrated in Hawaii, placing Duane DeSoto and Xabi Lafitte also in 5th.
Colin Mc Phillips (USA)

With an increased heat length and a radical beach start (given the tough conditions for making it out to the break) the riders had plenty of time to go for broke in this spectacular final. Despite linking together a couple of great waves and spectacular maneuvers,  neither Kai nor Peyo appeared to reach their peak performance in the final, placing them respectively in 3rd and 4th. It became a battle of epic proportions between Colin McPhillips and Antoine Delpero (both World Champion longboarders), as they delivered one spectacular ride after the next: Antoine combining stylistic and critical nose-rides with vertical snaps and driving bottom turns, and Colin demonstrating full rail turns and committed cutbacks, both vying not only for the event title, but also the Air Tahiti Nui award for the best single wave: a round trip ticket to the beautiful islands of Tahiti.
Peyo Lizarazu (France)

In the end, with his screaming fans on the beach and demonstrations of both calm under pressure and exceptional showmanship, it was to be Antoine Delpero's day, for the Event Title and the Air Tahiti Nui 'Best Wave' award. We were serenaded by the Tahitians, who played and sang a native song of thanks, "Maururu". As the crowds assembled around the prize-giving podium and the results were announced, it was evidence to all, that the Stand Up World Tour is here to stay and that this is only the beginning of a long and exciting story for the sport and its athletes.
